I numeri in inglese: dal piccolo al grande!

Ciao a tutti! Oggi ci immergiamo nel mondo dei numeri in inglese. Non preoccupatevi, non è così complicato come sembra. Anzi, scoprirete che ci sono delle logiche molto chiare che vi aiuteranno a capirli e usarli al meglio.

Iniziamo con le basi, i numeri che usiamo tutti i giorni.

I numeri da 0 a 20: le fondamenta

Questi sono i numeri che vanno imparati a memoria, un po' come l'alfabeto. Sono le fondamenta su cui costruiremo tutto il resto.

Un piccolo trucco: Notate i numeri dal 13 al 19? Finiscono tutti in -teen, che è la radice del numero thirteen che deriva da three e teen. Questo vi aiuterà a ricordare che si riferiscono all'età tra i 13 e i 19 anni, la cosiddetta "età adolescenziale" (teenager).

Le decine e i numeri fino a 100

Una volta capiti i numeri da 1 a 9, le decine diventano molto più semplici. Hanno una terminazione che si ripete: -ty.

Ora, per formare i numeri intermedi (tipo 21, 35, 99), basta unire la decina con il numero unitario. Mettiamo un trattino (-) tra le due parole.

• 21 si dice twenty-one
• 54 si dice fifty-four
• 99 si dice ninety-nine

Esempio: My grandmother is eighty-five. (Mia nonna ha ottantacinque anni).

I numeri grandi: centinaia, migliaia e oltre

Ora saliamo di livello! La logica rimane la stessa, ma aggiungiamo nuove parole chiave:

• 100: one hundred (o, colloquialmente, a hundred)
• 1.000: one thousand (o a thousand)
• 1.000.000: one million (o a million)
• 1.000.000.000: one billion (o a billion)
• 1.000.000.000.000: one trillion (o a trillion)

Una differenza fondamentale con l'italiano: la virgola e il punto

In italiano, usiamo il punto per separare le migliaia e la virgola per i decimali. In inglese è l'esatto contrario!

• Italiano: 1.000.000,50 (un milione e cinquanta centesimi)
• Inglese: 1,000,000.50 (one million and fifty cents)

Come si compongono i numeri grandi?

Si procede per "blocchi" di tre cifre. Ogni blocco ha la sua parola chiave (hundred, thousand, million, etc.).

Prendiamo 1.234.567.

1. Leggi il primo blocco: 1 si dice one million.
2. Leggi il secondo blocco: 234 si dice two hundred and thirty-four thousand.
3. Leggi l'ultimo blocco: 567 si dice five hundred and sixty-seven.

Unendo il tutto, diventa: one million, two hundred and thirty-four thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven.

Esempio:

The new stadium costs five million, eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Il nuovo stadio costa cinque milioni e ottocentocinquantamila dollari.

Numeri ordinali: primo, secondo, terzo...

I numeri cardinali (one, two, three) indicano una quantità. I numeri ordinali (first, second, third) indicano una posizione in una serie.

Ecco i più comuni:

• 1°: first
• 2°: second
• 3°: third
• 4°: fourth
• 5°: fifth
• ...
• 20°: twentieth
• 21°: twenty-first

Un trucco: La maggior parte dei numeri ordinali termina in -th, tranne i primi tre. Dopo il 20, la regola si applica solo all'ultima cifra. twenty-first (non twenty-oneth).
